Grandma Murrell’s Cherry Bread
The kids and I are FINALLY back from our trip to Colorado. If you are on our Facebook Page, then you know what crazy issues we encountered while flying back last Thursday. I kid y’all not, I have never been so happy to set foot on land before in my life. It feels really great to be back home 🙂
Even though our experience with the Airlines was horrible, our actual stay in Colorado was a good one 😉 The whole reason for the trip was to help out my wonderful sister, who was in the last few weeks of pregnancy with her third child. Her hubby has been deployed the last 9 months and she is not stationed near family, so I took it as my sisterly duty to help her out for two weeks 😉 She didn’t have the baby while we were up there…and instead had her 2 days after we arrived back here in Louisiana…..

My sister’s mother-in-law, Mary Lee, joined us in Colorado during the last few days of our stay. This recipe for Cherry Bread is her recipe. My brother-in-law absolutely loves this bread, along with my nephews. I have had the recipe stashed away in my collection for a long while and have never tried it, but that changed this past weekend. Mary Lee was planning on making it while we were up there, but between taking care of 4 children and helping out with other household duties, she never got around to it. So I decided to give it a whirl and make it myself when the kids and I came back this weekend.
I am very glad I did! Now I know what all the hoopla has been about with this bread. The maraschino cherries and cherry juice give it such a cheerful color AND gives it an outstanding cherry flavor. I am a cherry lovin woman…and love anything cherry-like….to include this bread. Not only that, it is super simple to make as well! Just throw the ingredients together, mix, and bake! No chopping necessary 😉 Make a loaf of this, top each piece with some cream cheese, and serve it for breakfast 😉 Or serve it as a nice snack during the day. Either way you choose, you definitely will not regret making it. We <3 and miss you Mary Lee!!! Thank you for such a great recipe! 😉
Grandma Murrell’s Cherry Bread
(makes one loaf)
Ingredients:
2 eggs, slightly beaten
3/4 cups sugar
1 and 1/2 cups flour plus 1/4 cup for coating cherries
1 and 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 10 oz. jar of maraschino cherries without the stems
1/4 cup cherry juice from the jar of cherries
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Take cherries out of the jar and mash them with a potato masher. Place 1/4 cup of flour in a small bowl. Take the cherries and place them in the flour…making sure to coat them all.
3. Discard the flour that had the cherries in it.
4. Place the coated cherries in a larger bowl. With an electric mixer, mix all other ingredients together in a bowl. The batter will be thick but don’t panic. It’s supposed to look like that 😉
5. Grease and flour a loaf pan (I used a 9 inch one) or a mini loaf pan.
6. Place batter in loaf pan and bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Notes: If using mini loaf pan, fill each loaf with 1/4 cup of batter.
I just had to let you know this: My mom's name is Mary Lee and she has her own cherry dessert too. Her's is made like a cobbler.
Oh my goodness! I can't tell you how happy I am for this recipe. I LOVE the cherry bread at Bob Evans and I'm guessing this is like their recipe. Thanks so much – Welcome Home – and congrats on being an aunt again. Bummer you missed getting to see her. She's a dollbug.

Do you use the 1/4 cup cherry juice listed in the ingredients along with the cherry juice in the jar of cherries?
No…you just use the 1/4 cup cherry juice. That was a typo and I have corrected it 😉
I am going to try to make this right away. We have been searching for a "Bob Evans Cherry Bread recipe" and this may just fit the bill!!
You mentioned amaretto . . . I don't see that in the ingredient list. Is there supposed to be any vanilla, almond or amaretto flavoring in it too??
That was a typo. I fixed it. I meant to say I love anything with cherry flavor 😉 There's no amaretto, almond, or vanilla flavoring in the recipe. Although if you wanted to, you can add those flavorings to see how they would taste.

I found this to be a bit odd in flavor so I added vanilla…it took the flavor up a notch.Hopefully it keeps the taste while baking… I also had to bake it for 55 minutes. Im going to put a lemon/butter glaze on before serving, hopefully it turns out tasty. I hate wasting ingredients.
I'm sorry the flavor was a little off for ya. You will have to let us know the outcome of adding the vanilla and putting the lemon/butter glaze on.
